CVE

CVE-2011-3248

TITLE

Apple QuickTime Vulnerable to integer sign error

Trust: 0.8

sources: JVNDB: JVNDB-2011-002689

DESCRIPTION

Integer signedness error in Apple QuickTime before 7.7.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted font table in a QuickTime movie file. When decompressing the sample, the application will fail to accommodate for the canvas the sample is rendered into. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within how the application parses font names embedded within an atom. When parsing the font name, the application will treat a length from the file as a signed value when copying font data into a buffer. Due to an unsigned promotion, this can be used to write outside the bounds of a buffer which can lead to code execution under the context of the application. The problem occurs when handling a specially crafted movie file. Successful exploits may allow attackers to execute arbitrary code in the context of the currently logged-in user; failed exploit attempts may cause denial-of-service conditions. Versions prior to QuickTime 7.7.1 are vulnerable on Windows 7, Vista, and XP. NOTE: This issue was previously discussed in BID 50388 (Apple QuickTime Prior To 7.7.1 Multiple Arbitrary Code Execution Vulnerabilities) but has been given its own record to better document it. Apple QuickTime is a multimedia playback software developed by Apple (Apple). The software is capable of handling multiple sources such as digital video, media segments, and more. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 ZDI-11-340 : Apple Quicktime Font Table Signed Length Remote Code Execution Vulnerability http://www.zerodayinitiative.com/advisories/ZDI-11-340 December 7, 2011 - -- CVE ID: CVE-2011-3248 - -- CVSS: 7.5, AV:N/AC:L/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P - -- Affected Vendors: Apple - -- Affected Products: Apple Quicktime - -- TippingPoint(TM) IPS Customer Protection: TippingPoint IPS customers have been protected against this vulnerability by Digital Vaccine protection filter ID 11876. - -- Vendor Response: Apple has issued an update to correct this vulnerability.
